Gregor hardly slept at all, either night or day.
The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment.
He was hardly inside his room before the door was hurriedly shut, bolted and locked.
She had hardly turned her back before Gregor came out again from under the couch and stretched himself.
He could already hardly feel the decayed apple in his back or the inflamed area around it, which was entirely covered in white dust.
He concentrated on crawling as fast as he could and hardly noticed that there was not a word, not any cry, from his family to distract him.
Before, he had taken great pride in how considerate he was but now it hardly occurred to him that he had become so thoughtless about the others.
But he needed great self-control to stay there even for the short time that his sister was in the room, as eating so much food had rounded out his body a little and he could hardly breathe in that narrow space.
And while Gregor gushed out these words, hardly knowing what he was saying, he made his way over to the chest of drawers - this was easily done, probably because of the practise he had already had in bed - where he now tried to get himself upright.
But his mother was to be punished still more for what she had done, as hardly had his sister arrived home in the evening than she noticed the change in Gregor's room and, highly aggrieved, ran back into the living room where, despite her mothers raised and imploring hands, she broke into convulsive tears.
